What You Need to Know About Heat Pump Maintenance

heat-pump-cashIf you’re not already relying on your heat pump to keep you cool on a day to day basis, you will be soon. The weather is starting to heat up, and soon we’ll be in the middle of the hottest months of the year. A big part of getting your heat pump in shape for the demands of the summer is scheduling preventive maintenance for it. Before you write off your heat pump as being taken care of in that department, though, you should know that heat pump maintenance is slightly different from maintenance for other climate control systems. Let’s go over the unique requirements that heat pumps have for maintenance, and when you should schedule it for yours.

Let’s go over the unique requirements that heat pumps have for maintenance, and when you should schedule it for yours.

The Importance of Heat Pump Maintenance

Like all climate control systems, heat pumps require professional maintenance if they are to stay in good condition for as long as possible. Far too many people still avoid calling for repairs for their heat pumps unless there’s an obvious sign of a problem with the system. Most heat pump problems aren’t going to announce their presence with easily recognizable symptoms, though, unless they’ve been developing for a very long time. That means that your heat pump is very likely to become damaged before you realize that it’s having problems. It’s better to catch issues before they develop far enough to start showing symptoms that way, which means you need to schedule preventive maintenance.

Preventive maintenance appointments involve your technician closely examining your heat pump for any areas that look like they may be in need of repairs. Those parts can then be fixed before they start to cause problems for the wider system, saving you money and quite a bit of frustration. If you are careful to schedule preventive maintenance for your heat pump consistently, you should be able to extend the effective lifespan of the system by a number of years.

How Often to Schedule Heat Pump Maintenance

Most people know that you should schedule preventive maintenance for a heater or air conditioner annually. There’s a reason for that, though. Most climate control systems have one season out of the year when they see far more use than the rest of the year. For air conditioners, that time is summer, while heaters see the most use in winter. Scheduling preventive maintenance the season before that demanding time ensures that the system is properly prepared for the increased strain. Things are different for heat pumps, however.

Because heat pumps are used throughout the year, they have to contend with heavy demand during both summer and winter. This means that they accumulate wear and tear twice as often, so they need to have maintenance conducted on them twice as often. You should be scheduling heat pump maintenance at least once during the spring and once during the fall. This should be sufficient to make sure that your system is prepared for its seasons of heavier usage.
