Weird Furnace Noises to Be Aware Of

In the next month or two, you’re going to start relying on your furnace to keep your home warm and comfortable. Along with this added usage comes more wear and tear, which means a greater likelihood of problems occurring. If you want to catch these problems before they cause too much damage, you need to know how to identify them early. One of the best ways to do that is to listen for strange noises coming from your system. Read on to find out more about how strange noises indicate a furnace problem and what to do about it.

Booming

Your furnace should not sound like a cannon firing every time it turns on. If it does, it’s probably because you have a dirty burner assembly. The burner assembly is the part of the system responsible for igniting the natural gas flow in order to create heat. Over time, carbon particles will build up on the burner assembly as a side effect of burning natural gas. Eventually, these particle deposits will build up so much that they actually stop the burner assembly jets from igniting on time. When the jets finally do ignite, they burn through all the excess gas at once and create a loud booming sound. Having the burner assembly cleaned should fix the problem.

Short-Cycling

Short-cycling is when your furnace turns itself on and off every couple of minutes. There could be a number of different things that cause this problem, but the important thing to note is that it increases the wear and tear on the system significantly. If the short-cycling isn’t dealt with, it can cause the furnace to require replacement years ahead of when it would normally break down. Call for repairs as soon as you hear this happening.
