Why is My Heat Pump Stuck in Cooling Mode?

heat-pumpAre you using a heat pump to keep warm this winter? Are you trying to, but the system is not heating for some reason? If your heat pump appears to be stuck in cooling mode, it is likely due to a problem with the reversing valve. It should not be difficult for a professional to resolve the issue for you, but you should call for repairs as soon as you notice it. Read on to find out why.

The Reversing Valve

The reversing valve is a four-way valve that sits in the refrigerant line for your heat pump. Inside the valve is a slide that determines which direction the refrigerant flows through the system. In one position, the heat pump is put into cooling mode. In the other, it will operate in cooling mode. The reversing valve is controlled by an electromagnet called a solenoid.

Reversing Valve Problems

If your heat pump is stuck in cooling mode, it means one of two things has likely happened. Either the slide has become stuck or the solenoid has lost its charge. If the slide is stuck, then all that will likely need to happen is for a professional to open the valve and reset it. If the solenoid has lost its charge, however, the only thing that can be done is to replace the part entirely. Either way, resolving issues with the reversing valve should restore the heat pump to its normal operation. So, if your heat pump is stuck in cooling mode, make sure that you call for professional repair services as soon as possible.
