Air Conditioning Problems to Know About

air-conditionerWe may be getting close to the end of summer, but you’re probably still relying on your air conditioner on a regular basis to keep your home comfortable. As long as you’re using your air conditioner for multiple hours a day, you still need to keep an eye on the system for any developing issues. Have a look at some common air conditioning problems you may have to deal with over the next few weeks, and their warning signs.

Refrigerant Leaks

Your air conditioner relies on refrigerant in order to cool your home. It evaporates refrigerant to absorb thermal energy inside the home. It then condenses the refrigerant gas back into liquid in the outdoor unit to vent the collected heat outside. The air conditioner relies on the same amount of refrigerant throughout its lifespan. If a leak develops in the refrigerant line, it will start to negatively affect the system’s output capacity. If you notice fluid dripping from your air conditioner, it is a good idea to call for repairs as soon as possible.

Clogged Air Filter

The air conditioner contains an air filter, which helps to protect the system from dust and other debris that are commonly found in a home’s ductwork. While the air filter is good at protecting the system, it has no way of ridding itself of the debris that it collects. If the air filter is not replaced every three months or so, it can become clogged. A clogged air filter will cut off the air flowing into the air conditioner, reducing its output capacity and causing other problems. Fortunately, this is easy to prevent. All you need to do is make sure that you either have a professional change out your air filter, or do it yourself, every three months.
