Do I Need a New Furnace This Fall?

gas-burnerThe weather is getting pretty cold now, and it’s going to get colder soon. If you don’t have a heating system installed in your home that you can rely on, now is definitely the time to replace it. You don’t want to risk your furnace breaking down on you in the middle of winter. If you’re unsure whether or not your furnace can actually get you through another heating season, check out some of the symptoms below. These symptoms tend to indicate that it’s a good idea to replace your furnace.

High Monthly Bills

You should start to become concerned if your furnace is costing more from month to month than is justified by increased usage. As a furnace gets older, the accumulated wear and tear of years of normal use will start to negatively affect its efficiency. The furnace will be forced to operate for longer than it normally does in order to compensate for the lost efficiency. This drives up the cost of monthly bills. Once a furnace gets this worn out, the only way to resolve the problem is usually to replace it.

Old Age

The average furnace can be expected to last 10 to 15 years under ideal circumstances. You can expect that to fluctuate a little bit depending on your situation. However, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to get much more than 15 years of use out of your furnace. Once a furnace passes the age of 15 years, it begins to develop a wide array of issues. The cost-effectiveness of operating a system like that will decrease over time, only becoming worse the longer you insist on keeping it running. If you have a very old furnace, it’s probably a good idea to have it replaced before this year’s heating season gets into full swing.
