Replace Your Ductless System if It Meets These Criteria

ductless-mini-splitThe middle of summer is just about the worst time to have your cooling system fail on you, which is why it’s a good idea to replace beforehand if you think that might happen. Sometimes it can be difficult to tell when a climate control is on its last legs. If you know what to look for, though, you can have a new system in place before the old one breaks down permanently. Have a look at some of the ways that you can tell that your ductless system is in need of replacement.

Constantly Rising Energy Bills

As you use your ductless system more and more, the wear and tear on it increases. At first, this isn’t a big deal. As the system gets closer to the end of its life, though, the decade or more of wear on the system will start to negatively affect its efficiency. The ductless system will be forced to stay operating for longer and longer periods of time as its efficiency drops, which is what causes the spike in your monthly bills. If your electricity bills are rising for no apparent reason, it might mean that it’s time for a new ductless system.

Repair Issues

You should expect your ductless mini split to need repairs a few times during its years of service. There’s a big difference between needing to call for repairs every few years, though, and needing to do so every few months. A ductless system that breaks down multiple times a year is probably too worn out to continue operating properly. The parts inside it are starting to fail from old age, often in groups. Continuing to repair a system in that condition is little more than replacing it one piece at a time. It is much more cost effective for you in the long run to replace the entire system.

15+ Years Old

Even if you take perfect care of your ductless mini split, scheduling regular maintenance and repairs when necessary, you can’t expect it to operate indefinitely. If you’re lucky, you will get about 10 to 15 years out of your system before it becomes too old to rely on. You can keep an older ductless system operating beyond that point, but you will almost certainly need to spend far more on it than the system is worth.

If your ductless system is older than 15 years, it’s in your best interest to replace it. Consult with a professional about when to install a new ductless system, and how much you can rely on your current system in the meantime. No good can come from hanging onto an old system that can no longer perform properly. Get out ahead of the problem by installing a new system, and in the long run you’ll be very glad you did.
