The Advantages of Using a Dehumidifier in Your Home

Most of us already have air conditioners to keep us cool during the summer, but far fewer of us have methods for dealing with high humidity. Humidity issues are common in Washington State, and are especially bad during the summer. If you often have very humid air in your home, don’t just rely on your air conditioner to keep you comfortable this summer. Let’s take a look at how a dehumidifier can vastly improve your indoor air quality by removing excess humidity.

Problems Caused by High Humidity

Consistently high humidity is a problem all year round in some areas. It promotes mold growth, which is harmful to both you and your home. However, humidity is especially bad during the summer. Your body keeps itself cool by sweating. When the sweat evaporates, it takes heat with it, which cools you off. The higher the humidity, though, the higher the evaporation point of liquids like sweat. This makes it harder for your body to cool itself, which is why humid days seem hotter than they really are.

Dehumidifiers

A dehumidifier addresses high humidity by essentially acting as an air conditioner and heater at the same time. First, it cools the air circulating through it down to the dew point. This siphons the moisture out of the air. Then, it warms the air back up to the correct temperature and releases it into the ducts to be circulated. This allows the dehumidifier to remove excess moisture without interfering with the climate control in the home. If you have severe humidity issues in your home, especially if it’s making it harder to keep cool this summer, you should consider installing a dehumidifier.
