How Do Geothermal Systems Work?

If you were to dig down into the earth about 10 feet, the temperature there would be about 50° F —it stays this way throughout the year—no matter what the temperature of the air is above the ground. This consistency is what allows for efficient cooling and heating.

In order to take advantage of all that energy in the earth, a series of coils or pipes need to be buried in your home’s yard. Refrigerant is circulated through the pipes by a heat pump that is located inside your home. In heating mode, the refrigerant in the coils absorbs heat in the ground and carries it into the geothermal heat pump in your home, which then extracts the heat and blows it through your ductwork. In cooling mode, the geothermal heat pump absorbs heat from your home’s air into the refrigerant and then deposits it into the ground.

Geothermal Installation

Installing a geothermal system is a complicated process that should always be done by a professional. The geothermal installation experts at Sunset Air can help you figure out if a geothermal system is a good option for your home. Large holes or trenches need to be dug into your property to allow for the installation of the ground loop, and our professionals have years of experience working with systems as large and as complex as geothermal systems.

Geothermal Repair and Maintenance

Every now and again, your geothermal system is going to require repairs, and when it does, you can count on our team to accurately diagnose and fix the issue. We will work hard to get your system back up and running in as little time as possible.
