Install a Zone Control System to Save Energy This Winter

Most of us rely on central forced air heating to keep warm during the winter. This method of heating, which includes furnaces and heat pumps, is popular for a number of reasons. It’s affordable, versatile, and includes a lot of different options for individual heating needs. However, it’s not perfect. Central forced air heating is a one size fits all solution, in the sense that it can either heat the entire house or none of it. This generates a couple of different issues that can both waste money and make your home more uncomfortable during the winter. Fortunately, there is a way to fix these issues. Let’s take a look at how zone control can benefit you this winter.

What Is a Zone Control System?

A zone control system is a series of large valves, called dampers, which are installed at various intervals in the ductwork of your home. These dampers split your home into a number of separate zones, each of which is controlled by a separate thermostat in the individual rooms that the dampers service. When one of these thermostats detects a need for heat, it opens the appropriate dampers and turns on the heater.

The Advantages of Zone Control

Zone control is advantageous because it allows you to control the amount of heat that goes to different parts of your home. Instead of wasting energy on empty rooms, or creating hot or cold spots in areas that need different amounts of heat, you can set the ideal temperature for each part of your home. This both saves money on heating costs and helps keep your home more comfortable throughout the winter.
